The Bee and I
I'm an insectophobic. Well, not a severe kind, but some days I could runaway screaming only from having a moth fly near me. Although I can't recall when it all started, I still have vague memories of me as a kid hiding behind my dad, covering my ears because I was afraid that a bee would mistaken them as the entrance to its hive. Today, I regret to say, that the phobia continues to haunt me. People have called me silly probably a million times, but what can I say? It's not like I can help it.
A few days ago, in the attempt to clean up my kids' room, I found my daughter's junior encyclopedia and stumbled upon a page with bees on it. It's a beautifully illustrated book and the bees just seemed to jump right at me! The strange thing is, I suddenly had an image in my head that was screaming to be poured out onto paper. So I ended up in the studio instead, drawing and painting this girl and her friend. The bee. :))
I won't lie that I spent the longest time just drawing the bee. I had to cringe every now and then from observing the details. LOL! It was quite a challenge, but I must say I really love how it turned out.
Well, the next time you're out in the garden and see a bee flying your way...think of me. :)
Evangelina (and her bee!) is now available in my shop.
how interesting to have an insect phobia. i think of them as little beings, almost like fairies.
ReplyDeleteyour art is so beautiful, as is this post and the look of your blog.
xo
Yeah, I run from bees too. Although I am allergic to yellow jackets, I run from all of the flying ones. I love to paint them though. I suppose I am fascinated with them because I fear them... lol
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, because I am actually fascinated by bugs, and often include them in my illustrations. I have an insect collection on my studio wall and keep a hive of bees in my garden. The artwork is very good, and the bee looks divine.
ReplyDeleteI love bugs. Sometimes I think that if I hadn't become on artist I might have been an entomologist. That's not to say that I appreciate the more bitey members of the insect family, but honey bees are one of my faves. You've rendered it beautifully!
