Living a Dream (IF - Swept)

When I was about six, I decided that there was nothing more I wanted in the world than to become a pilot. After watching a local acrobatic air show along with hundreds of other people, I suddenly saw flying in loops up in the sky as the most miraculous thing that human had ever invented (next to roller skates and talking dolls, of course). Somehow the idea of being able to be one with the clouds, swept away by the winds, just put aside all other childhood dreams and cleared out a whole new space to make way for this new one.

 Balloon Ride, mixed mediums

Strangely enough, the dream stayed with me for a good number of years, only it became less logical and ridiculous. At first I started imagining myself flying in an airplane, then using wing-like contraptions, rockets under my arms, balloons, fairy wings and eventually just nothing on me.  I guess all I wanted to do was to fly and the "pilot" thing was just the most logical package my human mind could find. The good thing of having drawing as a favorite past time, I was able to pour down all these ideas out of my head and prove to myself that anything is possible. At least up in my head. :)

The original of this piece is now available in my shop.

I hope you're having lots of fun in your days and keeping the dream alive. You'll never know, it might come true.

Amalia, oxx

  2. To this day, I would love to learn to fly. I will say however, my hopes of being a wing walker have diminished somewhat....(age, bum hip, AGE....UGH!)
    I have flown a CAR...does that count???
To fly and feel the air rush by....wonderful!!! And that is what I see and feel deeply in this piece the pilot that still dwells within.
    Delightful!

    XXOO~~
Anne.....who would STILL consider wing walking, if given the chance...and some good heart meds!

  3. Boy hot dam! (dam with overheated water) this is a ripper - well obviously both a bodice ripper and chest ripper.

It's a wonderful piece Amalia, so full of patination and groovy goodness.

But seriously - this one sings :)

Finger crossed for your bundle of joy! You won't need those fingernail extenders then, eh :)

  4. I have always wanted to fly. I used to have weird dreams about flying but then I would somehow be falling shortly after. You know those sort of dreams where you wake up from the feeling of falling. It was just like that. Your artwork is so mesmerizing. This piece is very surreal and I love how you have placed everything.

  7. How very lovely!
Why is it so hard sometimes to remember dreams - or to sit down and appreciate all the ones that do come true? I actually am living my dream right now but I rarely stop to think about it!

  9. I'm kind of afraid of height so I don't think I've had that desire to fly:) But I wish I could teleport myself easily somewhere. Beautiful illustration as always, Amal:)

  11. What a beautiful childhood dream, I guess you can do anything in your head and on paper. Such a beautiful way to keep the dream alive. I love how you've added a little bird, as if to signify all the ways in which you dreamed of flying, and the background view of a perfect countryside :)

  13. Can I be your co-pilot? Or perhaps your wingman? I'd love to fly with you. Oh, to have the wind whipping through your luxurious locks and to be soaring high above buildings and trees! You've captured that dream so wonderfully here!

  14. Amalia,
this is gorgeous, there is something about the colors... their boldness that makes this striking. Plus every detail is wonderful.
When I was a young lass I wanted to jump in the clouds.... thinking I would bounce, imagine my surprise and confusion when my father told me I would fall right through!

  19. My precious Amalia, it would be so much easier for me to write you in brief that I like your drawings. But no! Every time I need to tell you more than that and because the last few weeks I've been quite short of time, I've postponed that mopment.
When you have an old dream, it's inevitable to wear it with you throughout the years. If it's beautiful, but not possible, it leaves somehow its traces in your life!
Who knows? Maybe one dayayou'll succeed to fly?! But still you are lucky to have the way to give birth to your dreams in your drawings. I like this one so much! The perspective, the round form of the earth, the calm face of that tender girl and the bird as a symbol of flying. Deep inside her - her desire to be "one with the clouds"...
Take care and enjoy your days!xox

  24. You have a wonderfully imaginative, creative mind Amalia! Fantastic recreation of your childhood dream. She is so lovely! My favorite dream of all time is my flying dream. I had it more than once. It was about 40 years ago. But it is still so vivid in my mind. I can still recall the sensation of soaring above the trees like it was yesterday!
